Winter Herbal workshops
Join us as we talk about how to incorporate plants
and their healing qualities into our lives.
We will be discussing when is the right time to use different
herbs and how to prepare the best quality of medicine for their use.
With this time proven knowledge we can care and prevent common
ailments that we or our families and friends may be experiencing.
Saturdays: 10am-1130:
Each class will include an herbal product demonstration and
samples will be provided. January 10th: Teas and Tinctures: Some herbs are more effective used as a tea and some as a tincture. Tea making is a very healing and creative practice. we will learn which herbs to use, for how long to cook or steep them, how to make them taste good, and when to drink them. We will also cover the simple process of tincture making. Tinctures are a more concentrated medicine than tea, last longer, and are made with alcohol or can be alcohol free. They tend to be fairly expensive in stores, so we will learn an easy and affordable way to make tinctures for our specific needs.
January 24th: Common Health Issues: We will mainly focus on issues you are interested in learning how to care for with herbs. We will talk about how to prevent and care for these issues. Some common health concerns we may talk about would be colds and flu, sore throat, cough, congestion, allergies, sore muscles or joints, digestive problems, urinary tract infections, pink eye….and if there is interest we may talk about more chronic issues like diabetes, heart disease, and stress. So come to this workshop with your own questions and concerns and we will discuss how to begin using herbs and other remedies to help care for the real health issues you or your family may be dealing with.
February 14th: Oils and Salves: The external use of herbal preparations may be extremely beneficial, enjoyable to use and easy to make. We will learn what plants are soluble in oil and in what type of oil to use. Some uses of oils or salves include ear infections, skin problems, dryness, sore muscles, chest congestion, hair treatments, burns, cuts, rashes…… Being that it is Valentine’s day, we will make a therapeutic massage oil or salve in class.
February 28th: First-Aid: There are many common spices in our kitchen, or plants growing in our back yard that may be used as common first-aid remedies. We will talk about how to utilize what we have in our kitchens and how to recognize what is growing in our yards and gardens for a variety of first-aid issues. Some issues may include bleeding, cuts, scrapes, bee stings, spider bites, splinters, sprains, broken bones, infections…..
March 14th: Children’s remedies: Learn how to care for your children’s common health concerns. Whether it is a diluted tea for an infant or great tasting herbal syrup for an older child, there are many ways to use herbs with children. Some other ways include bathes, poultices, great tasting snacks with herbs, lozenges, salves… We will talk about creative ways to introduce children to herbal medicine and how to use correct dosages depending on age and size of child. Please bring questions concerning your own family or friends.
March 28th: Tonifying herbs: Herbal medicine is best used as preventive medicine. Herbs have the wonderful quality of building our immune system, regulating our hormones, balancing our digestive system….. We will discuss all the wonderful ways herbs help our bodies work better, before we become sick or out of balance. These plants will become part of your everyday life depending on your specific needs. We will learn how to include them in our food and make them an enjoyable and beneficial part of our life.
April 4th: Cosmetics: Some of us spend a lot of money on creams, toners, scrubs, masks, bathes, oils, toothpaste, mouth wash….. After this workshop you will have the skill to make your own cosmetics at home with your favorite ingredients and save money. We will learn how to create products for your specific needs and preferences. These products are fresh and made from quality therapeutic ingredients, and are absent in preservatives and harmful chemicals.
